The Morning

Before the Day Begins

How does your day begin?

If you’re anything like me, it probably doesn’t start with deep thoughts or life-changing decisions. It starts with getting out of bed. Making coffee. Brushing my teeth.

Maybe you’re one of those people who can somehow get dressed, grab your keys, and be out the door in ten minutes. If that’s you, I’m impressed.

For the rest of us, it takes a little longer before the brain fully joins the party.

The interesting part is that while we’re busy getting ready for the day, the day is quietly getting ready for us.

Pressure will show up. It always does. The question isn’t whether pressure will find us. The question is whether we’ll be ready when it does.

I’ve realized that most mornings I don’t wake up asking, “What is my purpose today?” I wake up wondering where the coffee is.

But somewhere between that first cup and walking out the door, I have a choice. I can let the day happen to me. Or I can intentionally decide how I want to show up.

That’s a very different question. Who do I want to be today? How do I want to respond when something doesn’t go my way?

What kind of leader, spouse, parent, friend, or coworker do I want to become today? I’ve found that those questions matter far more than what’s waiting on my calendar. Because purpose isn’t something we discover once. It’s something we choose every morning.

When purpose becomes clear, intentionality follows. And when we consistently live with purpose and intentionality, something else begins to grow.

Trust.

Not because life becomes easier. Because we’re proving to ourselves, one day at a time, that we can handle whatever the day brings.

Tomorrow morning will probably look a lot like today. The coffee will still need to be made. The emails will still be waiting. Life will still be unpredictable.

But before you rush into everything waiting for you, pause for just a moment. Ask yourself this.

Who do I want to be today?

Sometimes the smallest question changes the entire direction of the day.
